Boeing Sheffield

CHALLENGE

Another interesting project was for Boeing in Sheffield, who manufactures high-tech components for Boeing’s Next-Generation 737, 737 MAX and 777 aircraft. For Boeing, Schiedel installed the ICS Chimney Flue System. ICS Plus is a twin wall flue manufactured with a stainless steel liner and stainless steel case. It is insulated with a 25mm thick high-density (128kg/m³) superwool blanket. Designed for pressure capability of 200 Pascal’s for use with semi and fully condensing appliances. As with all projects, health and safety is of paramount importance, and just like the Washington Plant, with it’s consecutive World Class Award, the team onsite followed similar safety rules, as the installers were provided with the relevant PPE applicable to the job and site rules.

SOLUTION

To ensure a smooth running oft he project a close dialogue between Boeing and Schiedel was important. Thus a regular Toolbox Talks/Installation Progress Briefing was held on a daily basis, were all challenges and required measures were discussed and reviewed to effectively control project and lead it to a successful end.

Bunhill 2 Energy Center

CHALLENGE

The main challenge was the safety aspect of the flue system in the residential area. The client had to demonstrate a pull test using selected fixings on the cladded wall surface. They discovered a 25mm gap between the concrete structure and the back of the concrete cladded sheet and advised (along with the help of a structural engineer) on the type of fixing to be used and also the methodology of the installment. Another issue was the aesthetics of the flue system. Given the location of the flue in a busy London City Centre location, the Islington Borough Council requested a polyester powder coated to Ral 7005 mouse grey. As the chimney systems from Schiedel are available in any colour this customers‘ wish could easily be followed.

SOLUTION

As the chimney systems from Schiedel are available in any colour this customers‘ wish could easily be followed. The MF system is manufactured using 0.6mm thick grade fully welded inner liner, 0.5mm thick grade 304 stainless steel outer casing with 25mm thick rockwool insulation. The product is proven and pressure tested for use on applications up to 5,000 Pascal (H1) rating and therefore can be perfectly used for installations, whcih require a high safety standard.

Energy Center for the Agrocomplex “Martynovsky”

CHALLENGE

This project was realised in the year 2018 in Russia in a small village called Martynovsky in the Kurgan region. The greenhouse building needed an energy centre for the efficient operation of the building. Schiedel provided a unique approach in comparison to the other competition by providing an optimum solution with maximum simplicity without compromising on reliability and efficiency. Customer requirements were met by using our steel chimney system ICS 5000_50 DN800- 900-1000 and by installing big diameters. In total 200 running meters have been used.

SOLUTION

In order to accomplish the project and to overcome any upcoming difficulties Schiedel needed to adapt the initial specification of the project. In close cooperation with the customer the best solution was found and the suitable products were identified. As this project required the use of non-standard a-typical elements, these were exclusively produced for this project. Due to the close contact and good relationship with the customer the project was a huge success.

Glasgow Dental Hospital and School

CHALLENGE

On behalf of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Schiedel supplied and installed 4 ICS Plus condensing flue systems to service the Hamworthy Modumax WM250c/750 boilers at the Glasgow Dental Hospital. There were various factors which had to be considered during the installation process. Due to the main contractors’ requirements on-site, the external ICS Plus System Chimneys had to be installed prior to the positioning of the boilers to allow the contractor to weather seal the building.

SOLUTION

To meet the customer’s requirements an above roof level special bracing was required to support the chimneys due to the highly exposed location. Schiedel’s adjustable wall brackets were fixed to the steel bracing to support the flues at 2.5m centers. After this was done, a further site visit and survey following the installation of all boilers was undertaken to determine the final internal flue route. As the appliances were condensing appliances, a 3 degrees slope needed to be built in to the connecting flue pipes to allow for the high volume of condensation to be drained off effectively. This was achieved using special 93 degrees reducing tee component to connect to the vertical chimney. This required millimeter precision in both measurement and subsequent design, as the installation of the flues in the constricted Plant Room had to be completed with the avoidance of the previously installed services.

K5 Spa automotive manufacturer, Bologna, Italy

CHALLENGE

This year Schiedel had another interesting project in Bologna, Italy. The project was realised for the customer K5 Spa, the planning studio for Tecnoform Spa, a manufacturer of interior fittings, systems and furnishings for luxury campers and off-shore Schiedel had to install an industrial heating system for this automotive manufacturer. The challenge was to replace and remove the old deteriorated freestanding chimney. Due to the very high amount of condensate the new chimney had to provide extra condensate resistance. To meet those specific customer requirements Schiedel planned and installed an horizontal drain point too. A super ICS 25 mm dn 500 + steel support pole, which was also supplied by Schiedel on demand was installed.

SOLUTION

An on-demand vertical support pole was planned and supplied for the lateral vertical support. During the early phase of installation due to a mistake by the customer the first base element of the ICS chimney was lost / thrown away, so when Schiedel started the installation a solution had to be found for repositioning and adjusting the height, therefore a concrete plinth has been built on site. Thanks to the prompt reaction of the Schiedel installation team and an additional visit on site by Schiedel’s engineering department solved the issue to the customer’s satisfaction.

LCD Moscow – Residential complex

CHALLENGE

This project was also realized in Russia in the year 2019 in Kashira city, which is located in the Moscow region. In total 5 residential buildings of a varying number of storeys (between 8–15 floors) were built, which have their own infrastructure facilities on an area of around18.75 hectares. In this huge complex also a school, hospital and three kindergartens were integrated. Schiedel’s task was to build chimneys for the huge boiler, which will deliver heat to all of the buildings of the complex. In total three Schiedel ICS chimneys with insulation 50 mm, a height of 70 meters and a diameter of 1200 mm and 1000 mm were installed. The delivery to the facility and installation of the chimneys were under the control of the regional government. The close collaboration with the customer and the weekly reporting about the project development led this project to a successful end, managing to meet the tight timings of this project.

SOLUTION

To ensure that the project was running smoothly a large number of hours were spent on the construction site to be able to react immediately. Together with suppliers of steel holding structures, Schiedel was working on the method of fastening the chimneys. The development of fasteners was based on HILTI elements.

Marine Leisure Center, United Kingdom

CHALLENGE

A very interesting project was at the Mariner Leisure Centre in Yarmouth UK, which is located not too far from the impressive Falkirk Wheel in Falkirk. The client was SSE, a gas distribution, electricity and telecommunication company headquartered in Perth, Scotland. The challenge was to supply, deliver and install a HP 5000 250mmID/350mmOD flue (50 cav) off a Capstone C65 CHP a gas turbine one. For this project the multifunctional overpressure exhaust system HP 5000 made of stainless steel was the perfect solution as this system handles over- and/or under pressures of up to 5000 Pascal as well as high or low exhaust gas temperatures. The flues had to rise vertically before turning 87° degree to run at 3° to the horizontal, with a 90° bend, for approximately 5 meters to connect into a HP 5000 250mmID/300mmOD (25 Cav) drained tee and then rising vertically for approximately 9m to termination.

SOLUTION

The Falkirk Council in Scotland required detailed drawings of the exhaust system provided by Schiedel. Construction went according to the plan as the vents had to rise vertically before being rotated 87 ° to travel approximately 5 meters at 3 ° to horizontal with a 90 ° bend, including expansion bellows and jacket, to then feed them to an HP 5000 250mmID / 300mmOD (25 Cav), allow the T-piece to drip off and then rise approx. 9 m vertically to the end. Due to the design of the building, extension brackets were required at various points to ensure the safety of the fume cupboard.

Prefecture Saint Brieuc, Bretagne, France

CHALLENGE

This project in France has been carried out by our Italian Schiedel team. The customer was ASTC, and is a big installer of generators and big energy supply appliances in the non residential market. The selected Schiedel product that fit perfectly to the requirements of the customer was the ICS 5000 with 50mm insulation, diameter 200, painted in the special RAL 702 colour. The request of the customer to have our ICS customized by painting it in a speific RAL colour was due to the demand of the customer that the chimney has a 100% fit to the design of the building. In addition Schiedel developed atypical flanged adaptors that meet the specific specifications of the generator. The installation was done externally and internally with a long horizontal flue pipe.

SOLUTION

All the A-type products needed have been designed in cooperation with our customer and our engineering team as well as with the production and design department in Teplice. The excellent quality of the painting and the colour was very appreciated by the customer. Schiedel was able to meet all customer requirements and deadlines as well as stick to the overall installation contract, despite longer delivery times from production in summer, due to a very good communication and coordination from all sides – logistic, production, customer care and service on site through our local agent.

Resch & Frisch, Austria

CHALLENGE

Schiedel has been supplying the market leader Resch & Frisch with high quality products for exhaust gas ducting for several years already. The company Resch & Frisch has been the market leader in the gastronomy for high-quality baking pastries for years. For several years now, the end consumer sector and retail trade have also been successfully developed. A new flue gas system had to be installed for the new bread baking line in the Resch & Frisch production facility in Wels. Schiedel took part in the tender and was once again selected to carry out this demanding project.

SOLUTION

In order to meet the requirements of the large bakery to discharge the exhaust gases optimally and efficiently, a total of 3 ICS chimneys with a diameter of 250mm – 600mm had to be installed. The total height of the finished system was approx. 9 m per pipeline and the ICS pipes were equipped with the appropriate PrimaPlus connectors. The coordination as well as the installation on-site was carried out by our Schiedel Kamin-SOS partner Thaler Kamin. Due to the close cooperation and the good on-site support, the project was completed on time. Due to the good cooperation, Schiedel has been able to deliver more than 70 chimneys to Resch & Frisch over the past 10 years since the production facility opened in Wels.

Center for data processing – SBERBANK

CHALLENGE

This has been one of the biggest projects for Schiedel Russia. For the first time in Russia, an HP5000 has been installed. This project was done for the Sberbank of Russia in Skolkovo, Moscow region and was kicked off in the year 2017. Installed was an HP5000 as well as an ICS5000. The length of each pipe was about 50 meters and a diameter 450 mm was used with an insulation thickness of 25 mm.

SOLUTION

As it was the first time for Schiedel Russia to install an HP 5000 and as it was a very big project as well, Schiedel sent steel experts from other Schiedel countries to Russia to conduct all relevant training and supervise the installation. To bring this interesting project to a successful end, Schiedel spends a large number of hours on-site at the facility together with the designers to accompany the installation process and support whenever needed.
